PC keeps connecting to Internet

I've just upgraded from Windows ME to XP Pro and now when
I am not connected to the Interent, the system keeps
dialling my internet connection. If I cancel it, it just
dials again. Any ideas?

Check your modem settings in control panel make
sure "dial when connection is lost" is disabled

Do you have WinXP configured to automatically check for updates,
and how often? Do you have WinXP configured to synchronize its system
time with an atomic clock, and how often? Both of these activities
would require Internet access, as would any other installed
applications, such as antivirus software, that you've set to
automatically update.

If the above doesn't apply, check your system for spyware or a
Trojan Horse application.

Or perhaps you have set Outlook (or some other email program) to
automatically check for mail on a timer.
