PC is on domain but I can't add users from domain to local Admin g

This is the strangest thing. I thought it was one funky old machine but I
just built a new machine with a fresh install of Windows XP Pro with SP2 on
it. I added both machines it to the domain fine. But when I go into Manage
from My Computer, Local Users and groups, then go into the properties of the
Administrators group I have the local Admin account and the Domain Admins
listing is "?" marked out. If I try to add a user to the Local
Administrators group from the domain all I see is the local machine name
under Locations... button.

The strange part is that I can browse the network just fine. I have even
loaded all 70ish Microsoft patches. It must have something to do with our
Windows 2000 AD servers. Of course the IT manager here says he has not made
any changes so I have to track this down.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

This is a classic symptom of DNS misconfiguration.

The XP box needs to point to your domain's internal DNS servers, not some
external DNS server.
