PC is constantly downloading

D

David Penty

I connect to the internet with a 56K modem. Whenever I download a file
it takes much longer than it should. When I am connected to the
Internet and not downloading anything (I don't even have IE open) I
look at the connection info and I can see it downloading 'something'.
if I just leave it it downloads about 8MB per hour. I have disabled
Windows Updates and stopped all the processes running that I don't
recognise. Nothing seems to work. I have the XP firewall enabled and
my antivirus software is up to date. Is this an overhead on the
firewall or something?
Is there anyway of moitoring what your PC is downloading?

Thanks

Dave

Check for other nasties 'spayware' or 'malware' as they are also known.

Never think one of these can do the whole job.
Try the first 5 before coming back and saying "That did not work!"
Also, you can always visit:

For more updated information.

Lavasoft AdAware (Free and up)

CWShredder (Free!)
** No longer updated as of July 29, 2004 - however, still a great product
and should still be run **

Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner (Free!)

That will clean up your machine of the spyware, given that you download and
install several of them, update them regularly and scan with them when you
update. Some (like SpywareBlaster and SpyBot Search and Destroy and
IESPYAD) have/are immunization utilities that will help you prevent your PC
from being infected. Use these features!

Do you have SP2 installed? Once SP2 starts to download, disabling Automatic
Downloads will not stop it for it has already started. There is a small
program
you can download to stop SP2's download activation. Best get the free CD from
MS to install.

Where can I find the small program that I can download to stop SP2's download
activation. I accidentally started windows update to download sp2 several
days ago and everytime I log on to the internet it keeps on going. As of
right now only 57% has downloaded. I don't want any of it because I ordered
and received the cd. I just haven't had time to install it yet. If I ever
do get this download to stop, are there any file I need to get rid of? Can
anybody help me?
