pc getting slower?

recently my pc seems to have gotten slower for no reason.
i defrag all the time, check for virus' & spyware etc. all that
good stuff.

i have winxp 3.6 ghz p4 1gig ram and i'm not overclocking

it is taking longer to boot and things are just slower. for example,
when i run itunes and try and run another program (even something as
simple as WORD at times) the music starts slowing down and getting
all choppy and things are slow. that would NEVER happen before.

things are taking longer to render or unzip, etc.
i'm not sure how high cpu usage is compared to when my pc was acting
normal.

but i think a 3.6ghz p4 shouldnt be acting this way. i could multitask
easily before. i set everything in bios to the default just in case i
might have changed anything, but nothing happened.

any idea what’s happening? :(

It wont be that even if you didnt.

Most likely you will find that DMA has been turned off on the hard drive.
Check that in the Device Manager.

If that is set to PIO, XP has turned the DMA off because its seen too
many errors on the cable to the drive. Replace that cable and done use
one of those round cables and manually reset the DMA as described
here under the heading WORKAROUND.

Unlikely to be that unless its pegged at a very high cpu % in which case its
almost certainly due to a virus that isnt being detected by your antivirus.

Correct. Even a 1G P3 shouldnt.

Bet its the DMA.

I don't know. I had the same problem and beat myself up for just about 2
weeks, trying to find the problem. Finally I gave up. Saved all files of
consequence then formatted the harddrive and installed a fresh version of
XP. Now the machine is chuggin' along same as it did first when I got it.
I find there isn't always an answer with these bloody things called
computers.

I agree with Botolf. Windows does tend to get a little twitchy over
time <note sarcasm>. "A complete reformat and reload once, or twice a
year is required" should be printed on every Windows install disk,
IMO... ;-)

I don't agree at all.....even windows ME can go years without
'reformatting!?' and reinstalling and thats on a fat32 partition.
Bizzar Crazy behaviour. Keep Norton System Worse, and the like OFF your
machine, and live happily ever after.

Alright, I concede the point. There may well be thousands of computers
sitting at the bottom of closets, that have had Windows ME installed on
them for years and have never been reformatted... ;-P Seriously though,
from 3.1 to XP, it's been my real-world experience that the occasional
reformat and reload is required to keep the OS fresh. Maybe an
occasional user could get by with fewer reloads, I don't know. I've
never been one of those, so I couldn't say. :)
