PC Crashed After Uninstalling Application

I upgraded McAfee VirusScan to version 10 on my Dell 2.53 Ghz machine running
the latest version of XP Pro. After the upgrade, the CPU would no longer
power-off without manually turning offer the power. McAfee indicated it was
a problem with my HP RecordNow or HP DLA software on my CPU. After removing
RecordNow through the normal "control panel" uninstall process, the CPU no
longer booted up. Instead I get the screen that says "start in safe mode",
"start safe mode with command prompt", "start last known configuration" etc.
I selected "start in safe mode", and "start last known configuration".
Neither will boot the CPU beyond this screen. Any suggestions on how I can
boot this drive and do a "system restore" or absent that, how I can recover
the data on the drive so that I can reformat it?

When this happens, you are always recommended to "un-install" the last
program/application that you had installed. In this case, remove McAfee
VirusScan so as to see if your system come up "normal" again.

I uninstalled McAfee 10 and the problem corrected itself. I reinstalled
McAfee 10 after McAfee told me I needed to uninstall HP RecodNow to correct
the sutdown problem. After uninstalling HP RecordNow, I can't boot the CPU.
Since I can't boot the CPU, I can't do a system "restore". Help! Any
suggestions how I can correct this situation?
