PC-cillin & WinXP SP2, Installation Order?

I am planning on installing PC-cillin Internet Security 2004 on my
laptop which is currently running Win XP Pro SP1. I have not yet
installed SP2, for fear it may be buggy. But in reading various
newsgroups, I'm convinced that I should go ahead and make the plunge
with SP2. I have already been running this laptop for a month,
totally unprotected, over an "always on DSL connection" and fear it is
already crawling with various malware vermin. It already runs very
slow (2 gHz, 256 meg), and I am living in pop-up hell.

My questions are:

[1]
Should I install PC-cillin Internet Security 2004 first or SP2 first?
Or ... perhaps it makes no difference at all?

[2]
After installing both PC-cillin and SP2, I presume there will be
several duplications. Should I turn off any features of
either PC-cillin or SP2, in order to avoid duplication and/or improve
speed/performance?

Thanks,
Henry

Henry,

To start, the first thing I would do is opt for a memory upgrade. 512MB
should be the minimum memory for XP computers. Secondly, you should either
remove the Adware applications causing your severe slowness and pop ups or
format your computer and reinstall Windows. Chances are, your computer came
with a recovery CD for reinstalling Windows. If you want to try removing the
Adware, go to www.ad-aware.com and download Lavasoft's free Spyware removal
tool. I must warn you though, unless you really know what you're doing, you
will never rid your system of all parasites without formatting. Even if you
know what you're doing, it may be quicker and easier to format. Just make
sure you backup your data first.

Now in answer to your question, Pc-Cillin will provide you with virus and
outbound Firewall protection which Windows XP SP1 or SP2 does not. So you
need it. If you setup Pc-Cillin correctly, you can turn off the XP firewall.
The XP firewall blocks inbound connections which Pc-Cillin will do as well.
In terms of the order, it shouldn't make a difference.

Have a look at this page: http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm
"Service Pack Installation Checklist." Fix and clean up your system
before dropping SP2 on to it; as that page advises.
