Hi, I'm asking on behalf of an elderley friend....

After shutting down his new PC at night he wakes in the morning to find it
has booted itself up. Any ideas?
I've had a quick look through control panel>power options etc but can't find
anything thats likely to cause this. He has very little software installed
other than Office as he uses it most for MSN Messenger and the like.

This has nothing to do with Windows. When the PC is turned
off, Windows is dead! The only think alive when the PC is off
is the BIOS. Your friend probably created an autoo-boot in
his BIOS.

Logically - the operating system usually cannot have anything to do with a
machine powering up from a powered down state - as that is a hardware
control and the OS cannot control hardware unless it is loaded and it cannot
be loaded unless the hardware is turned on.

What I am saying is:

You need to check the system BIOS - the part before any OS loads - to see if
it is set to power on daily at a certain time or has "wake-on-LAN" enabled
or something else. It's that part when you first turn on a machine that
says :

Press xxx to enter system setup..

Yes, this is probably a BIOS setting. Mine was "Wake on Modem" so
whenever the phone rang my PC would power up!

Reboot and press DEL or the right F-key as advised during startup to
enter the BIOS and go to Power Settings. Turn off all the "Wake on..."
options.

Thanks for the prompt replies..... I have only had access through Remote
Assistance so far as he lives a fair distance from me. Looks like a trip out
is needed. Thanks again

Have him check and turn off any "Wake on LAN" or "Wake on Modem" settings in
the BIOS.
