"Path to Deep" Error

S

Spencer West

Hi can anyone help on this strange one:

We have a Windows 2003 server (build
3790.srv03_rtm.030324-
2048)[Server1] that needs to copy files everynight to a
Windows 2000 server (sp3)[Server2]. Now this is via a VPN
over ADSL. The ISP and routers changed last week as we
have been having a lot of problems with the tunnels
disconnecting. When the tunels were up the copy ran fine.

Having just replaced everything the tunels are stable but
when we copy a file using our file transfer programs we
get an error that translates to a Path Too Deep error. So
we tried using Windows explorer to copy a file over a
mapped drive, the same result. This is a 38MB test file
going from the root point of a local drive to the root
point of the remote drive.

Now we have a second server at that location [Server3]and
we can copy the file to it OK (so the VPN is fine).
Copying the file from Server3 to Server2 locally is fine.

None of the local workstations at either site have any
problems with the network and every time we can copy the
file from Server1 to Server3 OK.

Can anyone help me as I am baffled.
TIA

The are too many characters in the subdirectory tree to access the file(s). The max is 256
chars. from the root to the last character in the file name.

You can use the SUBST.EXE command to shorten the path by the client or better yet, reduce
the depth of the directory being accessed.
