For the past three weeks I have been trying to download
the security patches for XP but when it comes close to
finishing the download, the connection gets terminated
suggesting there is a server problem and suggests I
contact Microsoft. Because windows was preloaded (OEM)I
somehow do not qualify for support unless I pay. I have
tried downloading the smallest patches first but no joy.
Any suggestions.

Hi,

Who is suggesting it is a "server problem"?Somekind of
error/dialogue box?Exact wording would help ensure you
receive accurate assistance.

If you have not already done so,enable the XP
firewall, unless you have a third party firewall:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320855

It is possible that you have a virus/bot onboard that is
preventing the download/installation of the patches.Run a
free virus scan at any of these locations, just to be
certain your O.S is clean:

Trend:
http://housecall.antivirus.com
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

McAfee:
http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp

Panda:

Download and run Stinger (Best saved to
floppy):

stinger:

Post back with the error messages/if no virus is found
and the problem persists.

If you have a friend or another pc connected via dsl or
cable and it is protected, you can download XP Sp1A and
Rollup1 from the microsoft download website and burn it to
a cd. Then, you can install it on your pc without having
to go thru the internet. These install the hotfixes for
mydoom, blaster, sasser, et al.
