I am having trouble with my daughters getting on the internet without our
permission and I want to require some kind of block where they can't go on
the internet without my permission and requiring me to put in a password. I
have Windows XP. I would love to cancel our internet, but they still need it
for school. Please help!

do you have seperate user accounts on the pc for you and your daughters, and
do you have a password on your windows log in screen??? pete

do you have seperate user names on your pc, and you do you have a password on
your log-in???? pete

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) requires a user name and password in
order to log on to the service, so log on to your account at the provider and
change the password to one that only you know. Then when you log on remove
the check mark on the logon window that says "Save password".

The you have to enter the password to log on every time and they won't be
able to log on unless they know what it is. The pasword is encrypted so you
can log on even if they are watching you do it.

Pete, We all have seperate user accounts and my wife and I are the
administrators. My windows log on screen does not come on when I turn the
computer on,, just a screen of all the account holders and you just click on
your name and it goes to your account. Thank you for replying!

That won't work if they are on "always on" broadband.......

Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or
off.
Clear the box for "Use the welcome screen"....It sounds like what you
want to do is to use the "classic logon prompt" as opposed to welcome
screen.
Good luck [:-)

First you need to create passwords for *everyone*, including the machine
Administrator account (which is not automatically displayed on the
Welcome screen).

You might find some net nanny software that will restrict their internet
use OR change their password regularly.

im not 100% on this as im not using xp at the mo, but the first thing to do
is set up your name and wife with a password, then log into your account and
im sure that if you open up internet explorer and go to tools, options then
connections, highlight your broadband connection and then click on settings,
is there boxes in there where it says something like "only use this
coonection for this user or all users", i think that then when your daughters
log in it wont connect to the net. i hope this helps, sorry but im at work at
the mo and we use windows 2000 on a network so i cant check the settings.

Hi kevin

let me know if the reply from eric is ok, if not i will try and figure
something else out, but to be honest eric's way is the best way.hope you get
it sorted, pete

Pete, I have seperate user names on my pc. I do not have a password on my
name, when I click on it, it just loads my personal settings. The same for
the girls, they just click on their name and it loads their personal
settings, and off to the internet they go.

Just unplug the modem somewhere. You have a choice of three
cords. WAN, LAN or the Power.
_No Passwords_???????????

Another option would be to use the Content Advisor:

The Content Advisor provides parents enhanced control over what content
their children can view on the Internet.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/evaluation/features/indepth/contentadv.asp

Configuring Content Advisor Settings
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/contentadv/config.asp

IE/Tools/Internet Options/Content/Content Advisor. From there make the
appropriate settings in content advisor for language, nudity, sex, violence,
non rated sites, authorized sites and supervisory password.

If you decide to use the Content Advisor and are using different profiles, I
have a workaround for which accounts are 'limited' in viewing and which are
not. E-mail me for details.

For some requirements, you may find it easier to invest in a
3rd-party solution, such as NetNanny or CyberPatrol.

You need to be aware, however, that *NO* technical or software
solution is fool-proof, and _none_ can ever adequately take the place of
live adult supervision. If you cannot trust your children to
safely/properly use the computer without supervision, you may have to
consider limiting their access to it.

Without passwords, you have *no* security; you've granted your
daughters free rein.
