If it is XP Home then the Administrator password is blank by default.

If it is XP Pro then go to http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and
download the boot disk, this will enable you to reset any system
password on an NT class
operating system.

thanks, i am talking about the screen that comes up before your desktop, on
mine it has my name and each of my kids names so we can each go on our own
account. this is the password i am trying to bypass

If you are using XP Home then enter Safe Mode by repeatedly taping the
F8 button as your machine starts up then login as Administrator leaving
the password blank ie type in Administrator and hit enter, then change
the password on your account via the User Accounts control panel.

If you have set a password on this account or you are using XP Home get
the boot CD or disk from the site I mentioned earlier.

Simply log in using the built-in Administrator account (which
cannot be deleted) and modify the desired account(s) and use Start > Run
"control userpasswords2" to modify the desired account(s). By
design, the only way to log into the Administrator account of WinXP Home
is to reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice
at the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login dialog box.

Password Expires

Failing that, Linux-based password cracking utilities abound on the
Internet, freely available to anyone who can use Google.
