Password required after updates

After downloading and installing updates I restart but then a password is
asked for but I do not use a password no matter what passwords are tried
"admin" etc none are excepted.
The only way I can get back in is restart using F8 and go to "last known
configuration that worked" then I assume that the updates are lost.
Anybody any idea's.
OS is XP Pro which is an upgrade from XP Home.

Then don't put one in - ie leave the field *completely* blank.

This problem apparently is caused by Update KB885835. Some people have
reported that after they logged in with Last Known Good Config (the
only thing that seems to work), they did not have to uninstall the
update. Others have reported that they *did* need to uninstall the
update. You should uninstall the update.
