I want to protect the access to my computer by requiring
a password after the bootup process. The instructiuons
in the windows support feature of Windows XP Professiional
does not give an accurate set of instructions. I am
asked to perform certain functions that do not exist in
my program. Has anyone else had this problem? How can I
set a password as soon as the bootup is completed. If my
computer is stolen, I don't want anyone to readily gain
access. Thank you for your time.

Jim;
Do you mean a BIOS password?
For that you need to check the motherboard/computer manual or contact
the manufacturer.

If the computer is stolen, that would only delay them only a short
period of time.
If they possess the computer the data is theirs.
There is no security without physical security:

Of course there is always Encrypted File System.
Use extreme caution to prevent permanent loss of data:

Go into the bios of the motherboard and set the password . Check with your
motherboard manufacture on how to do this..
