Password Protection on Windows XP

email reply from 'notifyms@microsoft, offers reply link but this will not open
Please advise which discussion group has reply
I restate basic problem ... old pc unrepairable but hard disc ok and place
in external drive(E) linked to new pc. access to files and data on E denied
as old pc had password protection on opening . How do I provide password to
access these important files.

You'll need to take ownership of the folders/files in question. The
Knowledge Base article below refers to WinXP, but the process is the
same for Vista:
