I am running a brute force password crack application on a
Word document. The program has been running all night. Is
there a simpler way to open a password protected file when
the user has forgotten the password?

If the password protects against opening the document then no. The
encryption is pretty good. That software could take weeks if the password is
good.

Not too bad then - if it was a correct guess :) - and assuming that you will
be changing this password what was it, so we can judge how good it was?
Which software utility did you use to identify it?
