Password protect specific programs

Is there a way to require a user to enter a password to
start an individual program in XP? I have a son that I
want to restrict from using certain programs on his
computer.

That is not quite how XP works.
The same effect can be achieved by using NTFS permissions
on the executable so that his account does not have execute
premission.

The machine needs to be using NTFS for its filesystem to do this.
If the machine is XP Home this is done in a F8 safe mode boot.
Locate the executable file. Then r-click into the properties of
file, go to the security tab, and then add to the list of permissions
his account and Deny that account execute with the checkboxes.

You need to do this to the actual executable, not just shortcut
links to it. Running the executable and looking in

You may want to evaluate our software Folder Guard, that lets you assign
passwords to specific files and/or folders, on both the NTFS and FAT
drives:
