password protect external drive

I cannot find a way to password protect an external hard drive. I want it
secure as I carry this to and from work. Does anyone know how I can do this?

Any idea whether TrueCrypt is required on any PC where the USB drive will be
connected? Or is it something you put on the USB drive itself?
