Password Protect Excel Spreadsheet?

Is there a way to password protect an Excel file so it can not be opened
without a password? If so, how secure is this?

When you do a file|saveAs, you can click on Tools|General Options (in xl2002)
where you can provide a password to open the file.

But there are commercial products that can crack this.

Hi Mike

Yes there is, FILE>SAVE AS then TOOLS>GENERAL OPTIONS
and enter your password.

Be warned pass words are case sensitive (A and a) also if you forget the
password you will not be able to open the file again. Although there may be
some options to recover from this else where. I am sure I have read
something but I cannot think where.

1. File > Save As > Tools > General Options

2. The longer the password, the more secure it is. A well chosen
password is impenetrable to the average user.

Be aware that there are ways to bypass the password in MS Excel:

Picky:

Length is only more secure if the password is not a dictionary word,
e.g., "g%#8&" is somewhat more secure than "password" (though both are
trivial).
