password problem

hi,my pc running winxp pro64bit has recently started asking for a
password.when it comes to the password screen it has 'Administrator' in the
username and promts me for a password.i never set a password and as ive said
this is a recent development.if i click ok without entering a password the pc
starts up and im in my administrator account (ie.when i click on start it
says administrator at the top of the menu) but i am not able to use add
remove programs or set program access and defaults,my pc supplier
(pentathlondirect) has told me that this was caused by windows update or .net
and that im not actually the administrator and the only way to fix the
problem is an os re-install,this seems drastic to me surely windows update
cannot lock me out of my own pc no matter what updates i install.any help on
this problem would be greatly appreciated.by the way my copy of windows is
genuine and activated (by telephone).
 
hi anando thanks ill give this a try.give me a couple of days though because
i work nightshift then ill give the answer a rating.hope it works.
