Password not retained in Outlook 2002 for IMAP server

Hello,

My problem is that even though I have checked the 'remember
password' option in the mail account settings for my IMAP
account, each time I restart Outlook, it will ask me for
the password to have access to the IMAP folders. I will
then check the 'remember password' option in the dialog box
which asks for the password, and won't be ask again for it
for a few minutes/hours depending on the moon phase, but
will be asked again at some point as if Outlook had
magically forgotten (I haven't succeeded to spot a pattern
yet, apart that it sometimes happens when I start browsing
my personal folders and then come back to the IMAP
folders)... Any idea what's the problem here? That's been
going on for a couple of weeks now...

Article Q297115 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297115)
described a similar problem though it was supposed to be
solved with Office service pack 1. I have Outlook 2002 SP-2.

The newsgroup mail of the 5/9/2004 6:01:45 AM
http://communities.microsoft.com/Ne...D=%[email protected]%3E
suggested to create a new profile to check if the problem
still occurs (this has solved the problem for someone
else). I have created a new profile and still had the same
IMAP password forgetfulness problem.

A few more info:
- I have Windows XP Pro SP-1
- When I restart Outlook, the logon information of my IMAP
account has the 'remember password' box checked but the
password box is blank. If I enter my password there, it
will stay when I close and open the email account setting;
though it will be again erased when I restart Outlook. On
the other hand, entering a password there at the beginning
doesn't prevent the dialog box which asks for the password
info to appear when I'll try to access the IMAP folder for
the first time. Similarly, entering the password in this
latter dialog box doesn't transfer to the box in the logon
information of the IMAP account settings, as if the two
were acting independently... Weird.
- All this password prompt issue was in the setting of
accessing the IMAP folders. I have the same problem when
doing send/receive; and also when sending my mail through a
secure SMTP server (the 'remember password' doesn't work
consistently).

Any idea how to solve this annoying issue?

Well, I have solved myself the problem, thanks to the nice
website by Robert Sparnaaij, with the pointers for this
issue given in
http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/passwordnotremembered.htm

It appears that playing with the registry like explained in
KB264672 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=264672 solved the
problem (even if they only mentioned Outlook Express in the
article and POP server; it seems it also applies to Outlook
and IMAP...).

For the record, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836664
seems to give more updated information about this issue...

Cheers,

Simon
