Password Mismatch Error Message

I have recently finished a website that I want to launch to the web. I have
secured a local web host provider, and have set up the account. They sent me
a password for frontpage extensions.

When I hit the "publish" button, and enter the location where I will publish
the site, a log in and password dialogue box pops up. It says "This operation
requires author permission for <RootWeb>. When I type in the password
assigned by my host provider, an error message comes up: "Server Error: An
error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files" and suggests that I check
the server log for details.

When I check the server log, it says: [error][client 216.168.109.137] user
RantOn: authentication failure for "/_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe": Password
Mismatch.

I am stymied by this password mismatch thing. Can anyone help? I've changed
every password I could think of or find to change so that they are all the
same as the one assigned by my hosting provider. I have tried to access
author.exe in the files mentioned above by exploring on My Computer. I have
tried using the configuration buttons in the bottom half of the Server
Administration Dialogue Box. My hosting provider will not return my calls,
they have tried everything they can think of. The Tech Support guiy there was
able to launch a site from his computer to my domain.

I am using version 3.0.2.926 of FrontPage Explorer.

What am I doing wrong?

What version of the FP extensions are on the server?

If the server is Unix/Linux with FP2002 extensions, the FP98 Client application is no longer
supported and you will have to upgrade to FP2000 or later versions or you have switch to a Windows
IIS web host.

Thomas,

Thank you. I will check with my service provider. Just to clarify, will this
issue be causing the password mismatch error that I mentioned? If so, what is
the cause of the problem? I could see having other problems due to a
discrepancy between versions of FrontPage, but not a password problem.

Come to think of it, I know the service provider is using FP 2002
extensions, but that's not to say that they don't have older versions of FP
Extensions that could be used. I'll check with them about it.

In case I have to upgrade (and I'd really rather not, as this is just a
hobby for personal use, not a commercial website to make money at), could you
tell me where I might be able to acquire a copy of FP2000? I have checked
olderversions.com, and I think even eBay, but it hard to find older versions.
Do you know of any places?

Just means the FP98 client can not connect to a Unix/Linux server running the most recent version of
the FP2002 extensions.
