Password doesn't install

Buy a Mac

word 2003 - I set a password to protect the document, however, when I open
the document again, it doesn't ask for the password. The file ext. is rtf

I have successfully set passwords for other documents in the past.
 
There are different types of passwords - some passwords are passwords to
open, others may be used to protect the document from modification. Are you
sure you used password to open?
 
RTF format does not support password protection. Save as Word Document.
