Password autocomplete not working

This seems to be a recurring thread here, but if anyone can help, it would
certainly be appreciated.

I use a web site requiring a username and password (to access an intranet at
work). I'm running XP home and IE6 with SP1. IE had not even been asking if
I wanted to save a password.... and after studying the messages here, I
edited the registery and deleted the SPW key, which is in:
HKEY_CURENT_USER\Software\Microsoft|Internet Explorer\IntellifForms\SPW

This fixed the problem and IE started working again and would remember my
username and password. This lasted for a day or two, and then the situation
returned back to the condition where IE was not recalling the name or
password.

I went through the process again, and deleted the SPW key, and the function
returned and worked, until again a few days later it quit.

What's going on here? Is there a way to make this function stable?

Thanks.

Hi kgb :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

The TIF size should be set to 50-60 MB. Larger caches tend to be more prone
to trouble.
See "Resizing your Cache"

AutoComplete Does Not Save Username and Password

Your History File may be corrupted:

For XP follow the instructions at Mike Burgess' site
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
To delete the History folder and index.dat (XP)

Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder and reboot.
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges)
Example: "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

and...
and...

Hope this helps.

Gave all these items a try. I downsized the temporary internet file cache
and cleared the index.dat files and all temp files. I deleted the SPW key
again and IE again regained it's feature where it saved the name and password
for my work's intranet site.

After turning on the computer tonight, it's lost the password again.

Any more things to try...... this appears to be a problem that I can fix,
and it breaks as fast as I fix it.

Hi kgb :)

Go to Tools>Internent Options>Content>click Autocomplete button
Click the Clear Forms button
Click OK and OK out
Close IE
Reboot your computer
Reopen IE>go to Tools>Internent Options>Content>click Autocomplete button
Under "Use autocomplete for> recheck under Forms "User names and passwords
on forms" and anything else on that dialog box that you want to use the
autocomplete for.
Click OK and OK out
Close IE then reopen.

See if that will resolve the problem.

also....

Also, your Index.dat may be corrupted or damaged. Not unusual.

Well... I guess I discovered what was going on, and it's probably not an IE
problem.

When I've got my Cisco VPN client running, autocomplete doesn't work for any
site that I've got IE set to remember a password on.

When I run IE without running the VPN, autocomplete works OK, and the 3 or 4
sites I've got a userid and password saved actually work.

I could have saved myself a lot of hassle if I'd seen this somewhere, but
maybe it makes sense.

Is this a know "feature" with IE?
