Is it possible to pass a parameter to a document so that when the document
opens it knows how to execute the mailmerge.
I'm thinking something like c:\mydoc.doc 1543
Thanks

No. Can you expand a bit on your application, requirements, and expectations?
And don't forget the version of Word involved.

The idea is that I would have a document about a row in a database. E.g. a
document about a person. I need to be able to tell the document which person
the document should resolve for. I have an external progam that should open a
document about particular person and the program needs to be able to tell the
document which person that is. Version of Word that I have is 97 though I
could upgrade if necessary.
Thanks

Mmmm. The program itself would have to provide and integrate that interface
(like a little dialog box, for example, where you could type the ID in).

Otherwise, you'd have to select the user (Mail Merge Query Options) once the
mail merge main document has been opened.

The alternative would be to link the main merge document to a query or special
database table that passes only the one, required database record to the mail
merge.

No version of Word provides for anything else; upgrading wouldn't make any
difference.
