i got a 80 gig hard drive, i'm using 20gig and have 60 gig free space all on
one partition. How can I can I add more partitions? Is third party software
the only way without reformating

I think Partition Magic is the way to go. Make your C:\ drive 20GB and then
maybe make a D:\ and E:\ drive, of 30 each?

Is this a second HD for you? If it's on the secondary channel, make a small
partition just for the Windows paging file for added performance. :)

Hi Mclemore:

I sense some mis-info on your part as regards to partitions. It would help
to know more specifics. Most importantly, why do you feel you need to add
more partitions? What do you perceive as the advantage? It won't add more
storage space.

IT's the only way to do it without reformatting, IIRC. Norton
Parition Magic 8 seems to work well.

Yes. Unfortunately, no version of Windows provides any way of changing the
existing partition structure of the drive nondestructively. The only way to
do what you want is with third-party software. Partition Magic is the
best-known such program, but there are freeware/shareware alternatives. One
such program is BootIt Next Generation. It's shareware, but comes with a
free 30-day trial, so you should be able to do what you want within that 30
days. I haven't used it myself (because I've never needed to use *any* such
program), but it comes highly recommended by several other MVPs here.

Whatever software you use, make sure you have a good backup before
beginning. Although there's no reason to expect a problem, things *can* go
wrong.

If "60 gig free space" means *60 gig unallocated space*, then you can
use the built-in utility of Disk Management to create an additional
partition(or partitions) using presently unallocated space.
