Partitioning

I want to partition my HD so i can install MSDOS but I don't know anything about it(partitioning), so i have some questions.

1) What do i have to do to partition my drive?
2) Will I have to format my drive first?
3) Will I lose any information?
4) Will I have to reinstall WIndows?
5) Does size matter? I .E., Does it make a difference how much free space I have?
6) Can I choose the size of the partitions?

Any answers will be appreciated, but i need them all.

There are many ways to partition a drive. First, you would need a
partitioning software, FDISK was the partitioning software included with
MSDOS. And FDISK will remove any existing paritions and remove all the data
on the drive as well. after setting up partitions with FDISK you would need
to format the partitions for the filesystem you want to use. And, you would
also have install Windows and any other programs you want installed.

There are other 3rd party (Non-Microsoft) products that let you partition
without losing data, but I would backup - i.e. copy to a thumb drive or
etc. - all of my needed data before doing anything with Partitions.

I would be curious why you want to install this - if you have windows XP you
can bring up a DOS windows (shell) by clicking the start buttion and
selecting run - then you type CMD and press the enter key on your keyboard -
this should bring up a DOS shell.

Windows XP doesn't have a native utility that allows for partitioning on the fly (not lose
files/data). You'll need a third party partitioning utility like Partition Magic, which
will allow you to add partitions, resize partitions, etc., without losing files, or having
to reinstall Windows XP:

I wouldn't use anything that's FREE to partition on the fly. If you live in a small town,
many programs like Partition Magic can be bought as downloads. Click on the purchase
link, select Partition Magic from the specific products drop down menu, then select the
option to Buy Download. After you've downloaded it, you might want to burn it to a CDR,
so if ever you have to reinstall, you'll have it on the CD.

As an alternative, you can download a 30 day trial version of BootIt Next Generation. I
haven't used BootIt, but others in this news group have. You might want to do a Google
search of this news group to see their comments.

You can download the 30 day trial version of BootIt Next Generation at:
