Partitioning woes

When I got my computer (40G hard drive & XP Home) the hard drive was
partitioned up as
primary - 20 G
extended - 18 G
unallocated - 2 G
I decide to change this to
primary 38 G
unallocated - 2 G
By using XP's disk management, I deleted the extended drive, then
deleted the partition. (according to MS help website)
Then I was stuck with
primary - 20 G
unallocated - 20 G
Further sleuthing and found out about extending the primary drive into
the unallocated drive using 'Extend a Basic Volume' http://tinyurl.com/cgsc5
Here are the woes.
My disk is NTFS formatted. I am the administrator.
Yet when I apply the 'extend size=18' command, I get this message
'The arguments you specified for this command are not valid'.

The above is early in the piece. Since then have downloaded trial
version of Partition Magic.
Partion Magic won't let me play. Tried two things.

1) Extend the primary into the unallocated: and
2) Created a partition in the unallocated portion then tried merging the
two partitions.

When applying the commands I get a prompt to go to Powerquest to buy the
product. Not a very good trials program methinks.
I don't want to fork out dollars for something I only want to do once.

Anyone out there able to help? Thank you.

What are you trying to do - meaning.. Why?
40GB - I wouldn't even bother partitioning personally.

As for the trial program - if it did the change you wanted (and that was the
only change) - yo think you would buy it - since you don't need it after you
change things with it?

Well leaving or having 2G of unallocated space serves no purpose,so useing
up that space is good, leave it at that.Having two partitions is ok,20G and
20G
is ok too.Why not boot to xp cd,recovery, type:DiskPart In DiskPart, delete a
partition,create one,then press Esc key,then format it,type:FORMAT D:
/FS:ntfs
When its thru,do same for other partition, after, type:EXIT Reboot to xp cd,
select install xp.You could leave one raw in recovery, then in xp go to
run,type:
diskmgmt.msc In msc format the drive.
