Partitioning with Disk Management

I am having problems accessing my hard drive in order to create partitions
with Vista's Disk Management. I have a brand new computer with Vista Home
Premium pre-installed. When I click on "Disk Management" (below "Storage")
within "Computer Management" nothing happens except that I get a message at
the bottom of the screen: "Connecting to Virtual Disk server." What am I
overlooking? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have 4 hard drives in my computer. It takes about 6-7 seconds to bring up
the drive information window.

I once left in a DVD (apparently there was something amiss on the disk) and
it took 20 minutes before I saw the results window.
