No harm. Whatever fits your work style or comfort level is the way to go.
I prefer to keep the main partition to just Windows as much as possible
(putting applications on another partition) simply to make the size of my
weekly Windows image more manageable.
A partition's size has no effect on the size of the image of that
partition. The Image file size will depend on the data that is
contained within that partition. The free space won't be imaged.

Yes, but... Even though programs still stick bits and pieces into
C:\Program Files\Common and into the Windows folders, the bulk of those
applications is over on D:. Result: I can fit an image of C: on a single
DVD. If I had everything on C: (I have several very large programs
installed) then I would need two. D: gets imaged now and then but since it
isn't the "guts" of the system - it is not imaged as often.
My choice to partition is based simply on convenience. No grand scheme or
theories involved. Just being cheap with my DVD media
