partition

I am using a second hand pc which did have windows nt, I
am an amature and know little, however when attempting to
upgrade from windows 98 to ME it mentioned I had a
partition on the hard drive. how do i get rid of the
partition
 
A disk drive is totally useless without a partition. The procedure for
putting a new disk into service is to first create 1 or more partitions on
the disk and then formatting those partitions. If you have a 2nd partition
on your disk it will just become another drive letter after formatting it.
If it is an extra partition and you want to combine it into your existing
partition then you need some 3rd party app like partition magic or start all
over by deleting all the partitions with fdisk and creating a new one.
