Partition Magic 8 alternative for Vista?

J

Jim McDonald

Does anybody know if PM 8 and/or Acronis Disk Director will soon
support Windows Vista?

Is there a good alternative disk partitioning software that supports
Vista right now?

Is Vista's disk manager just as good as the above third party
products? At first glance VDM looks a bit limited.

After upgrading to Vista I was disappointed to learn here that PM 8
doesn't support it. I've been using PM successfully for years...

TIA

You can resize partitions within Vista's Disk Management, so there's little
need for PM imho

If you create the Disk Director 10 boot CD from within Windows XP, and boot
the computer from that CD to do your partition work, Disk Director does just
fine.

I try to stay away from anything Symantec/Norton with a vengeance. Since
they purchased PowerQuest they have allowed Partition Magic to languish and
rot.

Gee, what else is new. They do that to every product/company they buy out
(remember PcTools?). It was much better that Norton Utilities/SystemWorks
(or whatever they are calling it this year) ever was or will be.

Not so - I need to expand the size of my vista partition - how do I do
that in vista (the free space I create from reducing another is after
partition 2!)

Acronis Disk Director 10.0 (Build 2, 117) works with Vista NTFS
partitions. I mainly use the Bootable media disk ( Not within Vista )
and have used it on a number of Vista installations. Sometimes I'll
have to run Disk Director in it's "Safe Mode" to access external USB
drives - otherwise it works very well.

It's a little tricky...

You have to move all your data off the second partition and then delete it -
thereby creating an unallocated space.
THEN extend your VISTA partition, and then re-establish your second
partition and move your data back onto it.

Partition Magic certainly was efficient...

Jon thanks for this, one more question...

Do you think I can move the 2nd partition (using PM8) such that the
free space is then at the end of the Vista partition and then extend
said Vista partition?
