Dear Chich
Some of us it seems never learn from our mistakes. After
using a personal computer for almost a decade now and
having faced all the blues, I sometimes face the same
dileima as you do. From what you have described, it seems
your MBR (Master Boot Record) has been corrupted. There
is no way you can recover it unless offcourse you have a
backup copy of the same stored in another disk or media.
To say this I would not dishearten you. But you can try
some other third party partition utlity like PARTITION
MAGIC. However in my experience I had very little success
with such methods, causing me lots of agony of going
through reformation of the disk when there is no other
alternative left. Another method may be useful which I
often use (provided you have more than one partition in
your hard drive - note : If you have only one partition
than forget about this method and read no further) may be
booting up your syatem from the original bootable XP
diskette (provided you have one and booting from the CD-
ROM is enabled in the bios). Installer will check your
system for old installtion. If it finds one ( it means
you could still recover your data) and gives you options
of repairing the installation or fresh installation.
Choose a fresh instalation and please do not reformat any
old partition which the installer list. You can choose
your windows installation directory in a partition other
than C:\ (eg., D:\, E:\ etc.). If the installation
proceeds smoothly and XP works you can always back up
whatever data you have. I would suggest you back up all
the important data than again reinstall windows XP, this
time after reformating the C:\ drive and then go about by
reformating your other partitions (so that you get a
clean system. I would suggest you have more than two
partitions in your hard disk. Direct the my documents and
setting to the a partition other than the root directory
and always save your critical data on the drive other
than the root directory, that way if you have to
reinstall your OS and reformat your root directory you
are certain you dont lose your critical data. Hoping you
find luck.. See ya !. If you like further discussions
