Partition deletion

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop that came with the hard drive
partitioned into "C" &"D". Operating in Windows XP Home
Ed. I found instrucitons on deletion of the partition but
the drive size has not changed. How do I not only delete
the "D" Partition but ensure the space is moved to "C"
Drive. I Deleted the Partition but shows 3.68
GB "unallocated" Thanks for any help you can provide.

XP's DiskPart utility is capable of only partitioning a hard drive that is empty
or has "unallocated" free space.
For example, if you were to install a new second drive, DiskPart can be
used to partition and format it. DiskPart cannot segregate current files from
free space, therefore, only a sophisticated third-party partitioning program,
such as Partition Magic 8 , can be used with a drive that already has Windows XP
installed.

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows installation, is to purchase and use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8.

The alternative is to perform a "clean install" of Windows XP:

Ok, thanks. I ususally know how to delete partitions,
etc. the "old" way using the os disk and doing a clean
format and install. However the Sony Vaio recovery disks
do not "seem" to give me a clear option wherein I can
completely delete one of the partitions. Very
frustrating. Thanks for your help.

You have likely just deleted your recovery partition! Hope you don't have
future problems!

Thanks for the insight. I decided to reastall from the
resotre disk and allocate the lowest amount possible it
allows in the menus for the "D" drive, that way if it is
used by the system for restore there should be enough
space. Thanks.

You would need to use third party software such as Partition Magic or
BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full
functional trial) to do this without having to rebuild everything. With
those you could delete the D and expand C into the space released.
