Parallel to USB Conversion Nightmare

Hi,

I recently bought a Parallel to USB converter which I intended to attach to my old Canon N640P ex scanner. I've attached it and all but, the computer cant find it (the computer does'nt have a parallel port, you see). Which way should I go from here? Thanks.
