Paragraph symbol will not disappear even when Show/Hide button tri

I am supporting a Word 2000 user who sees the paragraph symbol and dots
throughout his documents. Told him to select the Show/Hide button but the
symbols remain. This happens on multiple documents, not just one. Is there
a Registry hack that can fix this, or some other method?

In Tools | Options, View tab, clear the "Paragraphs" option.

Check the View settings in the Tools | Options menu.
