Pane on Left

All of a sudden, all windows have a pane on the left side! Did Microsoft
push something after Vista was released, or was something changed
inadvertently? I have View|List selected on the menu instead of
"Thumbnails"

Hello,

Try this:

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > check 'use windows classic folders'

view (tab) > Apply to All folders > Yes > OK

The default was somehow changed from 'Open' to 'Explore' (same as /e switch)
