Palette of symbols?

Can anyone suggest a neat way of making an easily accesible subset of
symbols? There is an identifiable top twenty symbols we use in our company
documents, some obscure, some common. It would be great to be able to get at
them rapidly, rather than try to remember the location of each one. I
thought about a custom toolbar, but 1) I'd have to define a macro for each
symbol, and I'm trying to avoid using macros, and 2) I'm not sure how to put
a picture of the symbol on the button that goes with it.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Geoff.

Why not use autocorrect? Name each and add a hash to the beginning eg
#degree for the degree symbol. Sure it takes longer than typing ALT+0176 to
give ° but it is hard to forget.

That works really well, thanks!

Although Graham's AutoCorrect suggestion is probably more useful, note that
you can also assign keyboard shortcuts to symbols through the Insert |
Symbol dialog (and there is a list of Common Symbols in Tools | Customize |
Keyboard...).

Also, in recent versions of Word, the most recently used symbols are listed
at the bottom of the dialog for quick insertion, and you can resize the
dialog (you can even maximize it by double-clicking the title bar) to permit
display of more MRU symbols. If you put a button for the Symbol dialog on
your toolbar, it's pretty easy to access.
