Paint Does Not Start

Mark Wilson

We are running XP home. MS Paint works for all of our
users except 1. When that user starts paint it crashes
immediately with a popup like the following.

Paint has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience.

Any ideas??

odds are that user's registry has a corrupt entry related to paint (and
maybe other things too).

do you think you'd be comfortable hacking the reg, to graft the good
branch into the bad registry? it's not for the faint hearted!
I'd start by deleting any MSPAINT related keys in HKCU (when logged in to
the bad account) and hope that paint recreates them on first launch.

it might just be easier to make a brand new account, have that user copy
his stuff from the old My Documents (make sure it's shared) into the new
My Documents, and then (later, when you're sure) delete the old account.
All of his personal settings (desktop colors etc) will need to be
re-established. BEWARE that any digital rights that user had will be
lost, unless he first backs up his licenses and restores them to the new
account (using WMP9, and you'll need to be logged onto the internet when
you do it). [Since this is XP Home the same issues with regard to
encription keys, privledges and passwords does not apply].
