I am NOT a idiot, computer illiterate, or clueless moron, so DO NOT treat
me like one, as others have been in this forum. If you cant answer my
question Concisely and Succinctly then dont reply at all (This includes YOU
David). No amout of bullying can convince me that Windows is a perfect and
shining peice of software with no faults or flaws, either (not that i could
do better, of course). Beware treating people as inferior, they may just know
more then you. Also apologies for long subject (and message).

That said and out of the way, i have two questions too ask. I have a new, P4
3.6 HT, 1 gB dual chann mem, radeon 9800 XT, 260 gig hdd etc etc, so no
probs performance wise. Win XP Pro, SP2. Also have all updates.
My problems are this:
1. Windows is taking progressivly longer every day too log in after booting
up. It will sit there now for nearly 40 seconds "Loading personal settings",
hdd idle. Now i do have a number of network drives mapped (4), which get used
regularly BUT require login, so Windows cant auto connect, as it wont
remember both my username and pw. for them (not that i've looked particularly
hard)
This may be the issue, however this has happened slowly over time, and not
suddenly popped up whon i mapped them all. I am also on a network which uses
DHCP to assign IP's, however this normally happens it finishes loading (ie at
desktop), after around 10 seconds.
I have current anti virus (AVG& ZA) as well as current firewall (ZA
Suite), and have checked programs on startup (both start menu and reg)
however there is nothing new/major.
I also have checked CPU temp after its finished loading, and it is at idle
temp, not where it would be if it had been using 100% cpu during that time.
After about 45 sec it actually starts loading (hdd churns, etc) and is
finished in under 5 seconds.

2. Paging Files (aka virtual memory). Quote, "Virtual memory is space on
the HardDrive that windows treats as if it was real memory"
A: Despite having 1 gB of mem, why does widows still insist i need a 1.5 gB
swap file, i mean honestly they could have benn a little bit smarterr then
just to say "Pagefile=1.5x real mem. Terminal". Infact even if i set the
maximim pagefile to say 500mB, it STILL sets it to 1.5 gB.
I have not yet filled up my real mem, the only thing which even comes close
is Doom3 & UT04, so why do need so much? It seems the only actual way to
limit it's usage is to create a partition all of its own just for swap.
speaking of which windows really noods a decent partition manager, but
anyways.
B: Why does windows still swap data to the pagefile, despite the fact i have
600mB of real free, and therefore waste time and unnecissarily churn my hdd?
It's especially annoying since the time it decides to do this is when
I'm trying to load a program, drastically increasing load times.
C: When i turn the pagefile off, and i still dont come close to runnunig out
of memory BTW, while it nows runs MUCH faster and smoother (not to mention
quieter), programs still take up 'virtual' and 'real' memory, not to mention
various anylitcal progs tell me i still have a pagefile, except in real
memory.
I REALLY hope this isn't what they have done, IE instead of going to the
effort ef writing some specific code to deal with no pagefile situations they
just said "ok, we'll just put the pagefile in real memory".
D: When i have pagefile turned off, why do programes still pagefault?
"When a process requests a memory address A :
• if A is in the resident set of pieces then the
request is serviced normally;
• if A is not in the resident set of pieces then
a "page fault" occurs."
Since everything is in resident mem, with room to spare, then why are
programs still receiving page-faults, unless windows is doing somethin
Seriously dodgy with its handling of my mem.
E: A Question with task wanagers display of real and virtual mem usage for
programs. I have programs which read using more virtual then real and vise a
versa, however the sum of all rea usedl, all virtual used, or even the sum of
both is not even close to the amount of memery being used (as the pagefile is
turned off).
OK, thanks for taking the time to read this through.
And, not being rude, as i appreciate anyone who takes the time to reply, but
as a great person once said "If you don't have anything nice to say, then
don't say anything at all."
Regards, Kel.
