Pagefile on another partition

Hi Everyone,

I like to optimize my winxp pro setup by microsoft
recommendation of moving virtual memory to another
partition. I have configure my hdd as follows:
C drive : 20G
D drive : 35G
E drive : 5G <--this is where i am going to leave my
pagefile and print spooler files.

I read microsoft's article 314482 - How to Configure
Paging Files for Optimization and Recovery in Windows XP,
but i am still a little confused as to how to go about it
properly.

The part I am really confused about is "The optimal
solution is to create one paging file that is, by
default, stored on the boot partition, and then create
one paging file on another, less frequently accessed
partition." Therefore, "Windows uses the paging file on
the less frequently accessed partition over the paging
file on the more heavily accessed boot partition. An
internal algorithm is used to determine which paging file
to use for virtual memory management."

Microsoft says: "If you follow the preceding
recommendations, you meet the following paging file
configuration goals for optimization and recovery:

The system is properly configured to capture a Memory.dmp
file if the computer experiences a kernel mode STOP
error.

-and-
The paging file on the less frequently accessed partition
is used most often because it is on a partition that is
least busy."

I am not sure how to go about the above, is there anyone
out there that can help me, and or recommend the best
optimization setup, thank you very much.

Hi,

In a simple statement, Microsoft recommendation is that you leave small page
file on the boot partition to collect memory Dumps when there is a STOP
error or a system crash and then add a new paging file on a least accessed
drive. The stop error dump file storage needs nothing more than your
Physical memory +1. Hence, set the page file size to be RAM+1 on the boot
partition and create a new paging file on the E: drive.

Hope this clarifies. Good luck!!

Hi Kumaran,

Thank you very much for the clarification, so for my
system of 512mb ram, I will simply leave the default
pagefile setup to:
C Drive
initial size: 513mb
maximum size: 513mb

E Drive
initial size: 768mb
maximum size: 2304mb

And this will make my system use E Drive as the default
virtual memory? And retaining the function of having the
system to capture a Memory.dmp file if the computer
experiences a kernel mode STOP error?

Also since we are on the subjust of optimization, can you
recommand me other tips that I can use, thank you very
much.

Regards,

Fred
