The Kakadu

Running Windows XP HOME and IE6.0 on a new Gateway 500S. Everything worked
perfectly before Gateway replaced the HD and "reloaded" OS. Now, some of my
web pages display full screen and others, including MSN home page, display
only 2/3 screen. Can anyone tell me why and/or how to fix it? Thanks in
advance.

This is an interaction between your screen resolution and the website
design. Most websites are designed for a resolution of 800x600 but many
users today are running at higher resolutions. You can check your
resolution as follows, open Display in Control Panel, go to the Settings
tab, look at the slider setting on that tab.

Assuming you are satisfied with the screen resolution this can sometimes be
overcome as follows. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, select Internet
Options, on the General tab, click Accessibility, place a check next to
"Ignore font styles specified on Web pages and "Ignore font sizes specified
on Web pages" and click ok.

Thanks for response. As you suggested, I tried that (Accessibility options
.. . . Resolution change messes up everything else on computer) and the
results were really weird. Larger and overlapping columns, but still not
filling the whole screen. Strange part is, that some pages display
perfectly (BEFORE checking "Ignore . . ." boxes). Other pages, like MSN
home page STILL display in only about 2/3 to 3/4 screen, and the print is
VERY small.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

It's not a perfect solution but it's the only one I have for this.
Personally, I'm using a 19" LCD flat panel that I run at its rated
resolution of 1280x1024. I don't use the ignore options though at one time
with a different monitor I did.

You aren't missing anything on those pages that don't fill the screen. The
reason why some things get weird is because you are actually trying to use
your system to overcome something that was designed into various WebPages
and that, by necessity will sometimes do weird things. You have to decide
what works best for you. For my own point of view, I leave the WebPages to
the designers and if it doesn't fill the screen, as long as I can see the
whole webpage that's all that I'm interested in.

Also, remember, designers are not simply designing with IE in mind, there's
also Netscape, Opera, Mozilla and others. They try to do the best common
design. You are attempting to overcome a flaw that is largely related to
your own system's resolution. Also note, when you change your own screen
resolution, you may also need to change font size since, you may be using a
larger font size at the higher resolution than you would need to use or want
to use at the lower resolution.

There's no perfect solution for this.
