Page numbers not increasing

Page numbers will not increase from page to page in header. What can I do?
 
If you press Alt+F9, where the page number is located, you should see {
PAGE }. If you do not see that, you do not have a page field in the header.

To insert a page field, type the word page, then select it and then press
Ctrl+F9. Then press Alt+F9 to toggle off the display of the field codes.

Maybe you typed a number in a header instead of inserting a page
number -- you insert a page number by clicking the first icon on the
Headers & Footers toolbar that appears when you're in a H or a F.
(Check your ribbon if you're in Word 2007.)
