Page numbers in Word 2007

Word 2007seems to have gone overboard on design. I'm delighted that the
header/footer is finally on the INSERT tab and you don't VIEW it any more.
But why can't I just put a plain page number in? Surely my first choice
should be for a simple page number (or X of Y), rather than having to scroll
through massive options with bars, circles, lines etc? And when you select
header/footer and click Page Number, you get the same option to go to
header/footer (no, I'm there already and I just want a really plain page
number -- I can format it myself thanks).

It seems Microsoft cannot please all of the people all of the time. However,
if you can format it for yourself, you can also manually insert a field
{Page}. You could even make an autocorrect of this for (say) #p which would
save you more menu trawling.

I believe the ability to insert just a page number field was added in
a later version.
