How do I modify normal.dot so that the default page numbering is bottom
center with numbering on first page?

You can modify normal.dot just like any other document or template, by
opening it as a document (via the Open dialog box). Note, however, that you
should not change its headers and footers, since this can cause trouble when
you create labels or envelopes. (For more on customizing the Normal
template, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/CustomizeNormalTemplate.htm.)

The best approach is to create a custom template and insert the page number
in the desired location.

While you can modify normal.dot like any other temp;late, it's best not
to because some Word problems are solved by deleting normal.dot which
forces Word to regenerate the template in it original form (without your
changes). Better to create your own template with the desired numbering.
