I have a header at the top over every page which contains data on the left
and on the right. In the centre is the page number. Recently when using
View/Print Layout, the page number appears with a background of a little grey
block, although this was not the case previously. It is the same with all
documents. When the page is printed, the page number does not have this
block. Can you tell me what this block is indicating?

From the Tools menu, select Options and then go to the View tab and change
the setting for Field Shading from Always to either Never or When selected.
