Page number cross references all display as page "3"

I sometimes get this problem where upon opening a document all of my page
number cross references in the main part of the document (not the footer)
display as page "3".

The cross references refer to bookmarked items in the main part of the
document. References to any other part of the bookmarked item (i.e. bookmark
text, paragraph number, etc.) display correctly.

I can fix the problem if I manually select the doc (ctrl-A) & press F9 but
running a recorded macro that duplicates that action has no effect. Also, the
change only stays in effect while the document is open. If I close/reopen the
document, the page 3 problem returns.

Any one know what's causing this & how I can prevent it?

Thanks,
JoAnn

Go to Tools -->Options, select the Print tab. Uncheck Background Printing,
and check Update Fields.

The only reliable way to update fields in headers, footers, and references
is to print a page. (Can be to a dummy file)

Thanks for your response. Both options were already set as you described.
I also tried changing to Print Preview (in 2000, that used to be enough to
fix weird page ref problems but in 2003, it just changes the reference to
page "2").

I'll try your suggestion of printing a page to a dummy file. Thanks!
