sorry for cross posting

Windows started nagging me to install updates today,
turns out to be sp2 so i did so and it did a whole big
thing analyzing and what not and asks me to restart

So i restart pc and boots to the welcome screen then
crashes with this error
PAGE FAULT IN UNPAGED AREA

same when i reboot into safe mode. I want to roll it back
I think i ignored instructions to close programs, could
this be the result
Help me please urgently!

You may find out that you'll will need to format and do a
clean install to recover.

There instructions require that you be sure programs are
closed, all but the single user be logged off, etc. See
www.microsoft.com/sp2install for the latest instructions.
They are putting a red sticker on the SP2 mailer now.

I may be wrong about the need to start over with a format
and clean install, then SP2, but maybe somebody else will
have experience with this error.

Hope you have backups. This is a nice time to consider a
second partition for data.

The unpaged area is a section of memory used for code that is so
critical that it may not be paged out. So it is intended for system
code that is fully trustworthy. This fault can be caused by faulty RAM,
but in your case I suspect third party software getting in on the act
and installing itself there. I understand some aspects of Norton
(Internet Security?) does so; if you have anything of the sort you
should uninstall it before installing SP2, and check with the supplier
before putting it back - if you decide to do so.

But if you can't even boot into Safe Mode you are going to have to do at
least a repair reinstallation of Windows. If you have a 'proper' CD as
opposed to a OEM makers 'restore' method, Set the BIOS to boot CD before
Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take 'Repair' at
this stage), then after the license agreement take 'Repair
Installation'. This will retain your existing software installations
and most settings. But Updates will have to be run again, so get rid of
such third party utilities and run SP2 again - I would go get a free CD
of it, currently on many computer magazine cover disks or at some places
like Staples (Customer Service)
