everytime I run a virus scan my computer shuts off. A blue screen comes up
with a Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_Area. No new software or hardware has been
added. Do you have any ideas on what might be causing this?

Ted

It would be interesting to know what anti-virus programme
and version the OP is using seeing as it is the anti-virus
programme that seems to provoke the BSOD!

So what odds are you offering on McAfee and what on Norton?

Ted: I went to the website, but no luck. I did not find any malware on my
system. I did put in new ram, which seemed to coinside with the problems,
but after replacing the new ram with the original ram I still have the same
issues.

Can you provide a copy of the Stop[ Error Report?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during StartUp and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.
There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies if
you can access Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

What precise version of McAfee are you using? What are you actually
doing in McAfee when the problem arises?

Hope this helps.

Possibly a hardware failure-- Have you tried downloading and running any
sort of system stress test?
Video drivers have also been known to produce such a fault.
A high end video card with a too small power supply, or a power supply that
is starting to go downhill..
Overheating due to failed fans, or too much dust inside the case.
