Page cannot be displayed

I am trying to use a website that has a link to other
websites. When I click on a store that I would like to
go to, I get a "Page cannot be displayed". I have turned
off the ad blockers, my security is set at medium (I'm
using Windows XP Professional). The link is
click.linksynergy.com that I have the problem with.
Thanks.

Hi,

Depending on what kind of blocking programs you use, the
fault may lie with your Hosts file. Some forms of
ad-blocking software use this file to pre-empt connections
to certain websites (usually ad-related sites). Realizing
that the link you wish to visit is an ad-related website,
you may wish to try the following:

1) Click on Start, then Search for Files and Folders.

2) Search your computer for all files (including system
and hidden files), named 'Hosts'.

*The file you are searching for should be in your
windows directory. It does not have an extension, and will
be spelled exactly as you searched it, "Hosts".
Note: XP users will find the file in
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc".

3) Confirm its filename (Hosts), and its location, then
rename the file to 'Hosts.bk'.

This may be the cause of your problem, and if so, then it
should resolve the error you are encountering.

Regards,

Altrus

Had an identical problem except I could not access www.amazon.com and sister
sites. In all other respects the browser was working normally. Tried all
the MS KB 'fixes', disabling firewalls, AVP, reinstalling IE you name it I
tried it. Ended up formatting the C: drive and reinstalling WINXP SP2, now
everything working normally.

Hope you have better luck and if you do find a fix please post as I and
others will be very interested in the source of the problem.

This worked...but now even with my ad-blockers on, no ads
are blocked. Any suggestions? Thanks. J

Hi,

This seems to have worked for him. Have you tried this
method?

Hi,

A fairly good pop-up blocker is included in the
google-toolbar.

The google-bar is freely available here:

http://toolbar.google.com

While the hosts file is, indeed, a neat way to block sites,
it is a less than ideal way to block advertisements because
of unintended consequences, like what happened to you.

Regards,

Altrus

One more question....it's now the next day and I am back
to my original problem. I did go back in and rename the
hosts file again - but should I have to do this everyday
(I turn off my machine at night)? Thanks so much for
your help. J

Can't you edit out the problem line in 'Hosts'?

Hi,

It sounds like the program you are using to block ads is
based on using the hosts file. I would assume that every it
loads, it replaces your hosts file with its own version.
While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, this seems to be a
poor implementation of what otherwise would be a good idea.

I would suggest uninstalling that program (it doesn't
seem to be much good anyways), and using an alternative,
like the googlebar.

Best regards,

Altrus

Open the Hosts file using Notepad (set first to 'all files') and either
delete the offending entry or insert # in front to the offending entry.
