I have a laptop with Windows XP Professional loaded and
all updates patches applied, and all was working fine
until I could not access websites through Internet
Explorer. I can send and receive email with Outlook 2003
and get onto AOL and browse the Internet from there but
when I click on the Internet Explorer I get "the page
cannot be found" error. I have tried to access several
websites, I have used the system restore to go back to a
time when all was working, I can ping websites from a CMD
prompt, I have disabled all start up items, I have
deleted all my cookies and temporary files, I have run a
complete virus scan, and nothing seems to work. Any
ideas on where to go from here?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back

I had previously posted a similar problem and followed the
advice but IE still won't work after 10-15 minutes. The
only way I can get back is to reboot.

Did you update Ad-Aware and Spybot S & D after downloading them?
Did you run CWShredder?
Where did you post your HijackThis log?

Thanks for this advise, but before I try just wanted to
ask you this . . . I have already brought back my
computer (using system restore) to last Friday (way
before this happened) and I still could not use IE.
Doesn't system restore uninstall (or at least disable)
and spyware that was loaded days later?

Thanks.

Usually not.
